On Thursday, 10 January 2013, in the morning at 7:52, in Šakių district municipality, Girėnų village, on the Kaunas–Zapyškis–Šakiai national road (kilometre 58.50), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Honda Civic, an Audi 100 Avant and a Land Rover Freelander. Three people were injured — the 41-year-old driver of the Land Rover (hospitalized), a 17-year-old passenger of the Land Rover (hospitalized) and a 44-year-old passenger of the Land Rover (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 18-year-old driver of the Honda (less than a year of driving experience), who committed other traffic rule violations. All drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was snowing, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 50 km/h.
