On Wednesday, 30 January 2013, in the morning at 9:05, in Šilutės district municipality, Saugų village, on the Kaunas–Jurbarkas–Šilutė–Klaipėda national road (kilometre 196.41), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Volkswagen Passat, a Koegel SN 24 and a MAN TGA 18.390. Four people died — the 19-year-old driver of the Volkswagen, a 45-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (was not wearing a seatbelt), a 54-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen and a 49-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (was not wearing a seatbelt). One person was injured — the 47-year-old driver of the MAN (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 19-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (less than a year of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed and entered the oncoming traffic lane. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was raining, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
