On Friday, 27 September 2013, in the morning at 6:12, in Mažeikių district municipality, on the Kuršėnai–Mažeikiai national road (kilometre 44.78), in a roadworks zone, an Audi A4 hit an obstacle. One person died — the 26-year-old driver of the Audi. Two people were injured — a 19-year-old passenger of the Audi (severely injured, hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt) and a 21-year-old passenger of the Audi (severely injured, hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 26-year-old driver of the Audi, who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (2.72‰ blood alcohol) and had no driving licence. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 50 km/h.
