On Sunday, 10 November 2013, in the evening at 17:17, in Trakų district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 38.73), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Volkswagen Golf and an Audi A4. Two people died — the 21-year-old driver of the Volkswagen and the 53-year-old driver of the Audi. Four people were injured — a 20-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (hospitalized), a 20-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (hospitalized), a 19-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (hospitalized) and a 49-year-old passenger of the Audi (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 21-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (1 year of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, there was fog, it was overcast, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
