On Sunday, 21 December 2014, at night at 0:29, in Plungės district municipality, on the Mažeikiai–Plungė–Tauragė national road (kilometre 63.50), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved an Opel Astra, an Opel Zafira and an Audi A4 Avant. Three people died — the 46-year-old driver of the Opel Astra, a 44-year-old passenger of the Opel Astra and a 50-year-old passenger of the Opel Astra. The accident was caused by the 46-year-old driver of the Opel Astra (28 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed and entered the oncoming traffic lane. He was drunk (1.89‰ blood alcohol). A 50-year-old passenger of the Opel Astra was drunk (2.96‰). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was snowing, it was overcast, there was freezing rain, the road surface was icy. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
