On Thursday, 8 September 2016, in the afternoon at around 14:00, in Šilalės district municipality, on the Telšiai–Varniai–Laukuva national road (kilometre 48.78), a Volkswagen Sharan ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 33-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (10 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed and entered the oncoming traffic lane. He was drunk (2.13‰ blood alcohol). According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
