On Friday, 19 January 2018, in the afternoon at 16:55, in Kelmės district municipality, on the Ryga–Šiauliai–Tauragė–Kaliningradas main road (kilometre 94.64), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved a Subaru Legacy Outback and a Volkswagen Transporter. One person died — a 26-year-old passenger of the Subaru. Four people were injured — the 35-year-old driver of the Subaru (hospitalized), a 18-year-old passenger of the Subaru (severely injured, hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), the 57-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (treated as an outpatient) and a 19-year-old passenger of the Subaru (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt). The accident was caused by the 35-year-old driver of the Subaru (17 years of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was snowing, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
