On Monday, 19 August 2019, at night at 23:46, in Pasvalio district municipality, on the Panevėžys–Pasvalys–Ryga main road (kilometre 23.82), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a BMW 535I registered in Finland, a Scania R 114 L, a Volvo FH registered in Latvia, a Weightlifter 3STT and a Krone - registered in Latvia. Two people died — the 39-year-old driver of the BMW (was not wearing a seatbelt) and a 33-year-old passenger of the BMW (was not wearing a seatbelt). Three people were injured — a 9-year-old passenger of the BMW (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 3-year-old passenger of the BMW (severely injured, hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt) and a 11-year-old passenger of the BMW (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt). The accident was caused by the 39-year-old driver of the BMW (20 years of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. All drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was lit, it was overcast, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
