On Saturday, 12 January 2013, in the afternoon at around 12:00, in Alytaus district municipality, Vaisodžių village, on the Antakalnis–Jieznas–Alytus–Merkinė national road (kilometre 51.53), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Volkswagen Passat and a Mazda 323. Three people were injured — a 56-year-old passenger of the Mazda (treated as an outpatient), the 26-year-old driver of the Mazda (hospitalized) and a 3-year-old passenger of the Mazda (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 30-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (2 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (1.01‰ blood alcohol). At the time of the accident it was overcast, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
