On Monday, 2 September 2013, in the afternoon at 14:06, in Kauno district municipality, on the Panevėžys–Aristava–Sitkūnai main road (kilometre 81), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Mercedes-Benz Mercedes - Benz 814D registered in Poland and a Volkswagen Passat. Two people died — the 26-year-old driver of the Volkswagen and a 54-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (was not wearing a seatbelt). One person was injured — a 32-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (severely injured, hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 48-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz (a citizen of Poland) (26 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed and entered the oncoming traffic lane. Both drivers were sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was overcast, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
