On Saturday, 12 December 2015, in the evening at 17:02, in Širvintų district municipality, on Žolynų street, at the junction with Upelio street, a Volvo hit a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing. One person died — a 15-year-old pedestrian. One person was injured — a 17-year-old pedestrian (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 30-year-old driver of the Volvo, who failed to fulfil pedestrian duties. He was drunk (2.65‰ blood alcohol), had no driving licence and fled the scene. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was lit, the weather was clear, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 50 km/h.
