On Tuesday, 17 May 2016, in the afternoon at around 13:00, in Vilkaviškio district municipality, on the Marijampolė–Kybartai–Kaliningradas main road (kilometre 11.55), a collision while turning left (U-turning) occurred. The collision involved a Peugeot 406, an Akland, a Rolfo C170 and a Mercedes-Benz 1841. Four people died — the 47-year-old driver of the Peugeot (severely injured), a 26-year-old passenger of the Peugeot, a 25-year-old passenger of the Peugeot and a 26-year-old passenger of the Peugeot. Two people were injured — a 27-year-old passenger of the Peugeot (severely injured, hospitalized) and the 54-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by the 47-year-old driver of the Peugeot (19 years of driving experience), who failed to give way when crossing an intersection. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
