On Wednesday, 1 February 2017, in the evening at 20:31, in Šakių district municipality, Gerdžių village, on the Kaunas–Zapyškis–Šakiai national road (kilometre 42.15), a Volkswagen Sharan ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 37-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (19 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (3.41‰ blood alcohol). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was overcast, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
