On Sunday, 26 February 2017, in the morning at 9:29, in Prienų district municipality, on the Kaunas–Prienai–Alytus national road (kilometre 19.40), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Land Rover Discovery and an Opel Zafira. Two people died — a 60-year-old passenger of the Opel and the 61-year-old driver of the Opel. Three people were injured — a 21-year-old passenger of the Opel (severely injured, hospitalized), a 42-year-old passenger of the Opel (severely injured, hospitalized) and a 37-year-old passenger of the Land Rover (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 40-year-old driver of the Land Rover (13 years of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. He was drunk (1.95‰ blood alcohol). A 37-year-old passenger of the Land Rover was drunk (2.05‰). At the time of the accident it was raining, it was snowing, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
