On Saturday, 4 December 2021, at night at 0:20, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Varėna–Nedzingė–Merkinė regional road (kilometre 25.34), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved an Audi A4 and a Rover. Two people were injured — a 19-year-old passenger of the Rover (treated as an outpatient) and the 21-year-old driver of the Rover (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by an unidentified person, who failed to choose a safe speed. He fled the scene. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was snowing, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
