What is a cookie?
Cookies are small data files a website stores in your browser. Your browser's local storage works similarly. Temporary (session) cookies are removed when you close the browser; persistent ones remain until they expire or you remove them.
Cookie categories
- Necessary: required for the site to work — your login session, chosen language, your consent choice and your in-browser preferences (e.g. light/dark theme, map choices). These need no consent; without them the site would not function.
- Analytics: Google Analytics (GA4) cookies that help us understand, anonymously, how the site is used. Used only with your consent.
- Advertising: cookies from Google AdSense and its advertising partners, used to show ads, measure their performance and, if you allow it, personalise them. Used only with your consent; without it you may see limited, non-personalised ads that use no cookies.
Google Analytics and Google AdSense
Analytics and advertising data is processed by Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC. We use Google Consent Mode v2: until you agree, Google sets no cookies and limits data collection. We show ads through Google AdSense (Premium members see no ads). Consent is collected through a Google-certified consent management platform that follows the IAB Europe Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF): its window lists every advertising partner and lets you choose for each one. If that window doesn't load, we ask through our own cookie banner instead. If you agree, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites — Google's advertising cookies enable it and its partners to do so.
