On Saturday, 11 December 2021, in the evening at 19:23, in Kelmės district municipality, on the Ryga–Šiauliai–Tauragė–Kaliningradas main road (kilometre 98.20), a Volkswagen Golf registered in Ukraine ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 49-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (27 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (1.97‰ blood alcohol). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was overcast, the road surface was icy. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
