On Monday, 28 July 2014, at night at 2:33, in Širvintų district municipality, on the Vilnius–Panevėžys (k. pusė) main road (kilometre 36.33), a collision while moving in the same direction occurred. The collision involved a BMW 530 D and an Audi A4. One person died — the 65-year-old driver of the Audi (was not wearing a seatbelt). The accident was caused by the 23-year-old driver of the BMW (5 years of driving experience), who failed to keep a safe distance and failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (1.45‰ blood alcohol). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 130 km/h.
