On Saturday, 11 October 2014, in the evening at 22:30, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Varėna–Matuizos–Valkininkai regional road (kilometre 21.59), a BMW 520 ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 24-year-old driver of the BMW (5 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (2.01‰ blood alcohol) and fled the scene. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
