On Saturday, 14 May 2016, in the afternoon at 14:20, in Kauno district municipality, on the Kaunas–Jurbarkas–Šilutė–Klaipėda national road (kilometre 18.03), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved a Ford Mondeo and a Jeep Grand Cherokee registered in Germany. One person died — a 21-year-old passenger of the Ford (severely injured, later died from the injuries). The accident was caused by the 18-year-old driver of the Ford (less than a year of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was raining, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
