On Tuesday, 5 July 2016, in the afternoon at 14:25, in Šiaulių district municipality, on the Šiauliai–Pakruojis–Pasvalys national road (kilometre 5.82), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Volkswagen Crafter. One person died — the 77-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Golf. Three people were injured — the 36-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Crafter (treated as an outpatient), a 35-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen Crafter (treated as an outpatient) and a 4-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen Crafter (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by the 77-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Golf (39 years of driving experience), who violated overtaking rules, failed to keep a safe distance and failed to choose a safe speed. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
