On Thursday, 14 July 2016, in the evening at 19:29, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Merkinė-Leipalingis national road, an Audi 80 ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 43-year-old driver of the Audi, who failed to choose a safe speed. He had no driving licence and fled the scene. The driver was sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was raining, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
