On Saturday, 31 December 2016, in the evening at 20:30, in Šakių district municipality, on the Kaunas–Zapyškis–Šakiai national road (kilometre 32.54), a Mazda 2 ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 35-year-old driver of the Mazda (16 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. The driver was sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was raining, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
