On Saturday, 7 October 2017, in the evening at around 18:00, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 90.50), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Volvo S60, a Toyota Avensis and a Hyundai. Two people were injured — the 33-year-old driver of the Volvo (treated as an outpatient) and a 50-year-old passenger of the Hyundai (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by the 33-year-old driver of the Volvo (12 years of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. He was drunk (1.58‰ blood alcohol). According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
