On Saturday, 27 January 2018, in the afternoon at 16:35, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 41), a collision while moving in the same direction occurred. The collision involved a Jeep Cherokee and an Opel Astra-G-Caravan. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 26-year-old driver of the Jeep, who committed other traffic rule violations. He was drunk (0.75‰ blood alcohol), had no driving licence and fled the scene. At the time of the accident it was overcast, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
