On Saturday, 28 July 2018, in the morning at 7:21, in Zarasų district municipality, Smėlynės village, on the Kaunas–Zarasai–Daugpilis main road (kilometre 154.90), an Opel Astra hit an obstacle. Two people were injured — the 38-year-old driver of the Opel (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt) and a 40-year-old passenger of the Opel (severely injured, hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 38-year-old driver of the Opel (11 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. The driver was sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
