On Friday, 2 November 2018, in the evening at around 21:00, in Birštono municipality, on the Vilnius–Prienai–Marijampolė main road (kilometre 81.90), a BMW hit an animal. Five people were injured — the 20-year-old driver of the BMW (hospitalized), a 18-year-old passenger of the BMW (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 18-year-old passenger of the BMW (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 17-year-old passenger of the BMW (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt) and a 18-year-old passenger of the BMW (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt). The accident was caused by the 20-year-old driver of the BMW (less than a year of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. The driver was sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was overcast, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
