On Friday, 4 January 2019, in the evening at 22:49, in Šakių district municipality, Gerdžių village, on the Kaunas–Zapyškis–Šakiai national road (kilometre 41.27), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Saab 9-5. Two people died — the 33-year-old driver of the Volkswagen and a 30-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen. Five people were injured — a 15-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (severely injured, hospitalized), a 15-year-old passenger of the Saab (hospitalized), the 48-year-old driver of the Saab (hospitalized), a 47-year-old passenger of the Saab (severely injured, hospitalized) and a 20-year-old passenger of the Saab (severely injured, hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 33-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (11 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, it was snowing, it was raining, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
