On Friday, 19 July 2019, in the evening at 22:48, in Šiaulių district municipality, on the Kuršėnai–Smilgiai–Aukštelkė regional road (kilometre 5), a BMW 318i hit an obstacle. Two people were injured — the 25-year-old driver of the BMW (hospitalized) and a 14-year-old passenger of the BMW (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 25-year-old driver of the BMW (5 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (0.97‰ blood alcohol). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
