On Saturday, 22 July 2023, in the morning at 10:35, in Šalčininkų district municipality, on the Vilnius–Lyda main road (kilometre 41.63), a collision while turning left (U-turning) occurred. The collision involved a car and a Volkswagen Crafter 35 registered in Belarus. Five people were injured — a 72-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 51-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 41-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 63-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt) and a 68-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen (treated as an outpatient, was not wearing a seatbelt). The accident was caused by the 77-year-old driver of a car (58 years of driving experience), who failed to give way when changing direction. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was overcast, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 70 km/h.
