On Wednesday, 10 January 2024, at night at 23:50, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Varėna–Marcinkonys–Druskininkai regional road (kilometre 13.68), an Iveco AS440S40 registered in Estonia ran off the road. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 56-year-old driver of the Iveco (38 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. He was drunk (2.10‰ blood alcohol). According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was raining, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
