On Monday, 19 May 2025, in the afternoon at 15:27, in Kupiškio district municipality, on the Daugpilis–Rokiškis–Panevėžys national road (kilometre 49), a head-on collision occurred. The collision involved a Mercedes-Benz 518, a Domantas and a Volvo XC90. Two people died — the 61-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz and the 59-year-old driver of the Volvo. Seven people were injured — a 56-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (hospitalized), a 21-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (treated as an outpatient), a 22-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (treated as an outpatient), a 25-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (hospitalized), a 21-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (treated as an outpatient), a 19-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (treated as an outpatient) and a 37-year-old passenger of the Mercedes-Benz (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 61-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz (27 years of driving experience), who entered the oncoming traffic lane. He had no driving licence. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was raining, it was overcast, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
