On Sunday, 14 September 2025, in the evening at 22:37, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 58.42), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved an Audi A2, a Volvo and a Volvo S90. One person died — a 33-year-old passenger of the Audi (was not wearing a seatbelt). Five people were injured — the 31-year-old driver of the Audi (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 36-year-old passenger of the Audi (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 59-year-old passenger of the Audi (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), the 59-year-old driver of the Volvo S90 (treated as an outpatient) and a 58-year-old passenger of the Volvo S90 (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by the 31-year-old driver of the Audi (less than a year of driving experience), who violated overtaking rules. He had no driving licence. All drivers were sober.
