On Tuesday, 21 January 2014, in the morning at 9:20, in Plungės district municipality, on J. Tumo-Vaižganto street near No. 81, a Volkswagen Golf hit a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing. One person died — a 77-year-old pedestrian. The accident was caused by the 62-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (26 years of driving experience), who failed to comply with road signs or markings and failed to fulfil pedestrian duties. He was drunk (1.11‰ blood alcohol) and fled the scene. At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 50 km/h.
