On Monday, 24 February 2014, in the evening at 18:30, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 99.66), a Land Rover Discovery hit an animal. No one was hurt in the accident. The accident was caused by the 31-year-old driver of the Land Rover (15 years of driving experience), who failed to comply with road signs or markings and failed to choose a safe speed. The driver was sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, it was overcast, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
