On Wednesday, 21 October 2015, in the evening at 18:30, in Kauno district municipality, on the Kaunas–Zapyškis–Šakiai national road (kilometre 16.55), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved a Volkswagen Golf and a BMW 530 XI. One person died — the 63-year-old driver of the Volkswagen. Two people were injured — a 16-year-old passenger of the BMW (hospitalized) and the 21-year-old driver of the BMW (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 63-year-old driver of the Volkswagen (less than a year of driving experience), who violated overtaking rules. Both drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was twilight, it was overcast, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
