On Friday, 7 July 2017, in the afternoon at 11:15, in Vilkaviškio district municipality, on the Vilkaviškis–Kudirkos Naumiestis–Šakiai national road (kilometre 8.84), a side collision with neither vehicle turning occurred. The collision involved a BMW 320D and an Opel Zafira. One person died — a 74-year-old passenger of the Opel (later died from the injuries). Two people were injured — the 24-year-old driver of the BMW (hospitalized) and the 74-year-old driver of the Opel (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 24-year-old driver of the BMW (5 years of driving experience). Both drivers were sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
