On Friday, 26 January 2018, in the evening at 18:28, in Šiaulių district municipality, on the Šiauliai–Gruzdžiai–Naujoji Akmenė national road (kilometre 7.85), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved an Opel Astra, a BMW 320D and a Honda Accord. One person died — a 88-year-old passenger of the Honda (later died from the injuries). The accident was caused by the 46-year-old driver of the Opel (12 years of driving experience), who violated overtaking rules. All drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, there was freezing rain, there was fog, the road surface was wet. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
