On Wednesday, 3 February 2021, in the morning at around 7:00, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 67.38), a Skoda Octavia hit an obstacle. One person died — a 62-year-old passenger of the Skoda (later died from the injuries). The accident was caused by the 39-year-old driver of the Skoda (15 years of driving experience), who failed to choose a safe speed. Both drivers were sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was twilight, it was snowing, it was overcast, there was fog, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
