On Friday, 22 December 2023, in the evening at 22:28, in Šilalės district municipality, on J. Basanavičiaus street near No. 5, a BMW 525 D hit a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing. One person was injured — a 22-year-old pedestrian (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by the 25-year-old driver of the BMW (2 years of driving experience), who committed other traffic rule violations. He fled the scene. The driver was sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident it was twilight, it was overcast, the road surface was snow-covered. The speed limit on this section is 50 km/h.
