When crashes happen

How crashes distribute across the hour, the week and the year.

Over 2021–2025, most injury crashes happened in the afternoon — 32.4% between 3 and 7 pm, peaking at 17:00–18:00. Night-time crashes are few but the most dangerous: between midnight and 6 am, 12.4% of crashes were fatal, against 3.7% in the daytime.

Friday sees the most crashes, Sunday the fewest. At the weekend their character changes: on Saturdays and Sundays a driver at fault who was drunk, on drugs or refused a test caused 14.9% of crashes on average, against 6.6% on weekdays.

Summer brings the most crashes (the peak is August), February the fewest. But the darker months see the worst: in January there were 7.6 deaths per 100 crashes, in May 3.2. 36% of all deaths happened in the dark.

Analysis: Impaired drivers: half as many crashes, but no less deadly
