Drunk Opel driver and Audi crash on the Varėna–Marcinkonys–Druskininkai road
On Thursday, 1 August 2013, in the evening at 21:04, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Varėna–Marcinkonys–Druskininkai regional road (kilometre 24.94), a collision occurred. The collision involved an Opel Omega and an Audi 80 Avant. Two people were injured — the 55-year-old driver of the Audi (hospitalized) and a 20-year-old passenger of the Opel (hospitalized). The accident was caused by the 22-year-old driver of the Opel, who failed to choose a safe speed. He had no driving licence. Both drivers were sober. According to the register, the at-fault driver's vehicle had no compulsory civil-liability insurance (TPVCA). At the time of the accident the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
