Unlicensed Audi A2 driver and two other vehicles crash on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas road
On Sunday, 14 September 2025, in the evening at 22:37, in Varėnos district municipality, on the Vilnius–Varėna–Gardinas main road (kilometre 58.42), a head-on collision while overtaking occurred. The collision involved an Audi A2, a Volvo and a Volvo S90. One person died — a 33-year-old passenger of the Audi (was not wearing a seatbelt). Five people were injured — the 31-year-old driver of the Audi (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 36-year-old passenger of the Audi (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), a 59-year-old passenger of the Audi (hospitalized, was not wearing a seatbelt), the 59-year-old driver of the Volvo S90 (treated as an outpatient) and a 58-year-old passenger of the Volvo S90 (treated as an outpatient). The accident was caused by the 31-year-old driver of the Audi (less than a year of driving experience), who violated overtaking rules. He had no driving licence. All drivers were sober. At the time of the accident it was dark, the road was unlit, the weather was clear, the road surface was dry. The speed limit on this section is 90 km/h.
